We had the privilege of presenting CliCNord and LostToClimate Research Projects at the "Changing Currents Conference" in Copenhagen last week – a gathering focused on understanding the forces shaping the North Atlantic and Arctic regions. The event brought together researchers, policymakers, and innovators to discuss how climate change and geopolitical shifts impact communities and ecosystems in these vulnerable areas.
Project leader Rico Kongsager presented both CliCNord (which focuses on building climate resilience in small Nordic communities through collaborative research and local engagement) and LostToClimate Research Project (which addresses unavoidable, non-economic losses from climate-induced events, with a focus on cultural heritage and community identity in the Arctic). This was followed by a sneak peek of the upcoming documentary Fire, Water, Earth, Air (aka the CliCNord documentary) by Phie Ambo – storytelling that truly inspires change!
The discussions throughout the day highlighted the urgency of cross-border collaboration, knowledge sharing, and science-driven policy to ensure sustainable futures for societies living on the frontlines of climate change. Special mention of the final panel debate about sustainability and resilience in Nordic Societies, where Adrian Lema (National Center for Climate Research - DMI), Halla Nolsøe Poulsen (Nordic Atlantic Cooperation (NORA)), and Arne Flåøyen (NordForsk) had an interesting discussion, among other things, about how to include Indigenous Peoples in research and how to communicate with the public and politicians.
Thanks to the organizer Annika Sølvará and the rest of the Research Council Faroe Islands for creating such a dynamic space for dialogue and action, and to Alda Mohr Eyðunardóttir for the stage photo.
